S5.3 The Role of Cytoreductive Surgery and Hyperthermic Intra-peritoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) in Ovarian Cancer

Assoc Prof Melissa Teo Ching Ching
Symposium 5 – The Gynaecologist & Oncology

Majority of ovarian cancers are diagnosed at an advanced stage, often with peritoneal disease. Whilst optimal and preferably complete debulking forms the cornerstone of surgical management of ovarian cancer, a significant proportion of locally advanced ovarian cancer still recurs in the peritoneum. This talk discusses the rationale, technique and considerations in the performance of complete cytoreductive surgery, combined with hyperthermic intra-peritoneal chemotherapy (CRS & HIPEC) in the treatment of ovarian cancer, and evaluates the results of this combined modality treatment aimed at achieving long-term survival. Its role in the various settings of ovarian cancer is examined.
