S11.1 Human Trafficking: Myths & Realities

Dr Sharuna Verghis
Symposium 11 – Humanitarism and the Obstetrician & Gynaecologist

Malaysia is considered to be more of a destination country and to a lesser extent, a source and transit country for human trafficking.  Human trafficking occurs at the intersection of a range of migration configurations in Malaysia. Increasingly known as the “Germany of the East”, it is a major destination for migrant populations including economic labor migrants, refugees and asylum seekers, and stateless persons.

This lecture will define human trafficking and through case examples demonstrate the emerging issues and challenges related to combating human trafficking and responding to the protection needs of persons who have been trafficked to Malaysia, especially women and children.
