Case Report: The Mirror Syndrome

The Mirror Syndrome, also known as Ballantyne’s Syndrome, is defined as the development of maternal edema in association with fetal hydrops. Subsequently, maternal will complicated with pre-eclampsia and acute pulmonary oedema. We would like to share our experience in handling a case of Mirror Syndrome in our center. A case of 27 years old primigravida at 24 weeks period of amenorrhea. She presented with shortness of breath associated with hypertension crisis. Antenatally she was diagnosed with hydrops fetalis at 20 weeks. All the symptoms start developed after diagnosed intrauterine death at 22 weeks gestational age. We managed to deliver fetus vaginally.

Conclusion: Mirror Syndrome is a manifestation of extremely severe fetal hydrops. When the specific cause of fetal hydrops cannot be identified and corrected, we need immediate delivery in order to avoid fetal death and maternal complications which high risk of maternal morbidity and mortality.
