Reproductive and Sexual Health in Cancer Patients and Survivors

Asst Prof Susie Logan
Plenary 5

Within developing countries, survival after cancer diagnosis and treatment is rising. Increased importance is now being placed on survivorship, both in terms of addressing symptoms and maximizing quality of life. Sexual and reproductive health are two key areas affected by the diagnosis and subsequent medical and surgical management of cancer. Treatment that affects sex hormone production and delivery and surgery to the pelvic and genital organs can result in subfertility, infertility and sexual problems. Similarly, the cancer and its treatment may influence options for fertility control. The type and stage of cancer, treatment undertaken and where that woman is in her life course, will dictate which issue(s), be it procreation, contraception and/or sexual function, are the priority. Aimed at generalists, this talk will address the sexual and reproductive health issues facing female cancer patients and will discuss some management options.
