S1.4 Simulation based Training in Obstetric Emergencies

Dr Gunasegaran P.T. Rajan
Symposium 1 – Obstetrics & Intrapartum Care

Obstetric Emergencies are increasingly uncommon in obstetric units which can lead to loss of skills among professionals in such emergencies. Trainees are also less exposed to opportunities in training. Medical simulation fills this gap in training, acquisition of new skills and retention of old skills.  The OGSM Intensive Course in Obstetric Emergencies (ICOE) is a simulation based training course which uses of a wide variety of modules such as scenarios and manikins. This presentation will showcase these modules as well as share data on the improvements in various skills among participants at the various ICOE. It will show the surprising level of skills gained among the various cadres of staff in Malaysia and the region. Simulation training is further optimised by conducting regular drills with multiprofessional team involvement. An example of a drill and a checklist will be shared.

It is hoped that this presentation will stimulate interest in simulation training in obstetric emergencies and in particular adopting the OGSM ICOE.  Medical simulation is the way forward in skills acquisition and it should be incorporated in all obstetric units.
