Manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) is an alternative to the standard surgical curettage, performed under local anaesthetic or sedation in the daycare setting. The aim of our study was to assess the efficacy of MVA in the management of 1st trimester incomplete miscarriage and missed miscarriage in the 1st and early 2nd trimester. This was a retrospective study of 50 patients had undergone the procedure. The efficacy of the procedure was 96% (48/50) with 1 case of incomplete uterine evacuation and an abandoned procedure. Majority of the patients (86%) reported mild to moderate pain during the procedure with 66% of them agreed to undergo MVA in the future (if needed) and would recommend it to other patients. There was no major complication recorded. Although not widely used in Malaysia, MVA could be considered routinely, thus avoiding general anaesthesia and the need for access to theatre.
